God’s Good News Story 1: Creation

Throughout history, people have asked questions about the origin of the world and humanity.

The Bible begins by introducing us to God, the Creator of all things. In this lesson we discover how God created the world, how He created the first people, and what life was like in the beginning.

To help us remember and retell each Bible story, we use a simple storytelling framework:

People • Problem • Provision • Respond

Bible Passage

Genesis 1:1–2:3

Story in a Sentence

God spoke, and the heavens, the earth, and every living thing came into existence.

Story 1B — Creation of Man

Bible Passage

Genesis 2:4–25

Story in a Sentence

God formed the first man from the dust, breathed life into him, and created the first woman as his companion.

Discovery Questions

After reading and retelling the Bible story, discuss these questions together:

People

What does this story teach us about people?

Problem

What do you find challenging or hard to understand in this story?

Provision

What does this story teach us about God’s character and what He provides, reveals, or commands?

Respond

  • How will you obey what you learned today?
  • Who will you share this story with this week?

Based on these stories, how would you answer today’s guiding questions?

Curiosity Questions

The Creation stories raise many questions that people have been asking for thousands of years.

Beyond today’s guiding questions, people often ask:

  • Why was the world created? (coming soon)
  • Where did the first woman come from?
  • Why is there so much suffering and death in the world?
  • Why did God create the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil?
  • Who was the serpent in the garden?
  • Why did God rest on the seventh day?
  • What does it mean that mankind was created in God’s image?

Some of these questions are answered directly in Genesis, while others are explored throughout the rest of Scripture.
